Body language says a lot about us. It gives cues to others about how we feel about ourselves, our bodies, our confidence. Our posture can also help us breathe better, which helps the blood flow, increase endorphin release and gives us a better sense of being - it help us feel better. The Supergirl or Superwoman pose is one of those postures.
I was listening to a manager speak at a meeting a few months ago. She said whenever she was going to go into a stressful meeting she would go into the next room and hold the Superwoman pose for a few minutes. She would stand with her feet hip distance apart, stick out and open up her chest, left her chin, place her hands on her hips and breathe deeply. It would help calm her down and clear her head. She would go into the meeting with confidence and stamina.
I told my 9 year-old daughter to do the same with some boys that were bullying her in the playground, only this time, I had her do it in front of them. They left her alone when she stood up for herself and they have not bothered her since.
I myself have tried this pose whenever I feel tired at work, or getting ready to break up a fight with my kids and it has worked wonders. It also has a side affect, which helps to stretch out my back, neck and hips after sitting for a long period. There are many other stretches you can try, but when you envision yourself as Superwoman or Supergirl, there is a big difference in your attitude - kind of sassy. Try it! Let me know how it feels for you!
