Hear about different ways that women are staying fit and taking care of their bodies.
by OnTheCusp Yesterday I kicked off the new year by running a 5k, which benefitted Back on My Feet, a recovery program for alcoholics in the Boston area. One of the racers was a large, older woman who used a walker to support herself. She was a client of Back on My Feet. It was truly inspiring to see her cross the finish line, flanked by supporters. She had made her mark, and she was indeed, back on her feet in a big way. For many of us, January 1 is one of the few times that we take to reflect on our lives and make a conscience decision to make positive changes in our futures. It’s a time for looking back at the past, and for hopes and dreams of what’s ahead. For some of us, it’s a bittersweet moment, as we start a new year without those who were by our side at this time last year. For others, it’s a celebration as we defiantly bid Good Riddance to a bad year. But for everyone, flipping the calendar means we can optimistically start anew. There’s a blank slate – bad habits conquered; resolutions of improvements to body, soul and mind; and doing good for the world and for our families.
Yesterday, we started the Back on My Feet race with a few hundred of us forming a giant circle and reciting one of my favorite sayings: May God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. For me, 2016 begins with challenges on many fronts as I take on a demanding new job, try to help a loved one through deep depression, and adjust to my first born going off to college. But I’m inspired by others around me – such as fellow blogger Frenzied Femme – who are facing their future head on. My resolution for this year is to take things one day at a time, and every day, to make a positive difference to someone. For 2016, I salute all of you who struggled through something big, yet are back on your feet today. May this be the year you invoke the change that you want to see in your world.
