Every day Life

I know, I know... This is not my normal day to blog. And, I am interrupting my series on Australia with a one off. But I wanted to discuss something real, something that affects women. Recently, there was an engineer who was told that she was too pretty to be an engineer. It has spawned a movement.. #ilooklikeanengineer. I care very deeply about this. I am an engineer, as is the main organizer of our website. We established this site to be able to discuss our everyday issues. And workplace issues are certainly a big part of it. I am an engineer. I graduated from one of the top engineering schools in the world (let me repeat, in the world). I have trained and studied and worked hard. But, I have heard comments over the years... "Women don't belong here" was told to me by my boss (yes 15 years ago, really not that long). "You took a job from my son" from a coworker. And, "I forget that you actually know what you are doing" from my boss's boss after commenting on my looks. And, these were the comments said to my face. There are so many comments that I was told secondhand by others that were not said to my face. Then there are those comments that don't get back to me. Worst are the people who don't comment, but their actions speak volumes. The world has changed since I entered the workplace. It is better. But, it is far from acceptable. I look like an engineer. Because I am an engineer.
