Making Ornaments - Ink Inside

Week 2 of making ornaments with your kids and I am going to teach you to make a transparent, translucent ink ornament.  In this case, use a runny ink or transparent paint.  I used liquid water colors.  I had the colors of orange and purple (I found these colors in clearance some time ago, thus the very Christmas selection).  You also need a clear ornament (all of these projects will take the clear ornament).  And, you need a hairdryer.
We started by pouring in a little orange ink and swirling it around.  It didn’t stick particularly well to the smooth glass surface.  It seemed to tint the entire inside.  So, I thought we were ok to proceed with the purple.  Guess what color purple and orange make?  Brown.  Talk about a non-Holiday spirit ornament.  Yikes.  So, I rinsed out the inside, and we started over.
The second time around, I let my son pour the ink in, but then I used a hairdryer to heat off the excess fluid.  It created an interesting pattern where some of the ink was light and some was dark.  We did one ornament like this that was only purple and one that was both purple and orange.  I personally prefer the purple one, but others like the purple and orange mix.
I suggest playing around with color combinations.  I like the look of it.  But, one warning…. this is a job for an adult.  The ornament gets very hot when you use the hair dryer on it.  Be careful.  And, be creative.
